THE SHANTY TOWNS

Lima is home to over 10 million people, yet approximately 70% of the population live in poverty. A large portion of these people reside in the shanty towns that are rapidly expanding throughout Peru’s capital. Many members of these communities come from the Andes or the Peruvian Amazon. Thus, the shanty towns are primarily populated by Black, Amerindian, and mestizo campesinos. The shanty towns are composed of communities living in extreme poverty that lack running water, electricity, and other basic needs.
